Writing and Logic Workshop with Rob Stone
Logic & Analytical Writing
ANALYTICAL WRITING WORKSHOP
Analytical writing is often a challenging academic hurdle for students. In addition to requiring a clear organizational approach, the depth of understanding that must be communicated through writing becomes increasingly sophisticated each year, as do the expectations of analysis, evidence, and style.
This 5-Session workshop gives students a chance to work closely with a Harvard educated teacher and writer on skills that will build their confidence in approaching analytical writing assignments. In addition to the planning, drafting, and revision stages of writing, students will focus on ways to read closely and purposefully annotate a text with attention to detail.
Areas of concentration include:
· Formulating Analytical Thoughts
· Developing and Organizing an Academic Argument
· Writing a Clear Thesis Statement
· Using Logic, Specific Detail, and Textual Evidence to Support a Claim
· Writing Descriptively, Persuasively, and Personally
Using debates and discussions as launching points –– on topics ranging from interpretating song lyrics, to controversial moments in history, to big philosophical questions, to positions on current events –– students will further their ability to think analytically and express their ideas through effective writing.
Open to 8th, 9th and 10th graders, please let us know your interest and we will co-ordinate a date that works.
